Pit and fissure sealants

care

Grooves or pits and fissures on occlusal surfaces of primary and permanent posterior teeth trap food debris and promote the presence of bacteria due to their deep and morphological complexity thereby increasing the risk of developing cavities. Effectively penetrating and sealing these surfaces with a dental material like pit-and-fissure sealants providing a physical barrier that inhibits microorganisms and food particles accumulation can prevent lesions.

It is recommended to use the sealants or protective fillings together with fluoride in primary and permanent molars, as main players in caries prevention.
The placement of sealants should usually be accomplished as soon as possible following the eruption of the tooth to provide the maximum protection from day 1 of the tooth’s life.
The sealant materials used are either flowy or low viscous resin-based sealants or glass ionomer based, applied without injection or drilling and completely pain free.
Early dental examination is important to explain the need of sealants and regular follow up visits to maintain functionally serving sealants.
